Launch of the ASEAN+3 Regional Economic Outlook 2022

The ASEAN+3 Regional Economic Outlook (AREO) is an annual flagship report published by the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO).

Launched in 2017, the AREO provides a comprehensive assessment of both the conjunctural and structural issues facing the ASEAN+3 region, which includes 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China; Hong Kong, China; Japan; and Korea.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the region’s economies have been waging a war against the virus for control of their economies while saving lives. In 2021, the development of effective COVID-19 vaccines and high vaccination rates enabled the ASEAN+3 economies to relax pandemic containment measures, helping to facilitate economic re-opening. Looking ahead in 2022, just as it appears that the region may finally have gained some ground in its long battle against the virus, new risks have emerged.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict, if prolonged, could keep energy prices elevated and risks stoking inflation, dampening the prospects of economic recovery. It could also exacerbate supply chain disruptions and raise global cost pressures, posing the risk of stagflation for major advanced economies. Policy surprises in these economies would have implications for interest rates, capital flows, and financial market volatility in the region.

Join us ‘live’ to discuss ASEAN+3’s most pressing issues on growth outlook, and the opportunities, challenges, and policy priorities as it embarks on its post-pandemic growth phase.

Apr 12 – Virtual press conference.
AMRO Chief Economist, Dr. Hoe Ee Khor, and Deputy Group Head and Senior Economist, Anthony Tan will present and discuss ASEAN+3 regional outlook risks, and policy considerations.

April 13 – Webinar on “ASEAN+3 Growth Strategy in the Pandemic’s Wake”.
AMRO and industry experts will assess the potential nature and extent of economic scarring caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on ASEAN+3 economies, and consider the implications of the pandemic for the region’s growth strategy.

AGENDA FOR PRESS CONFERENCE (APR 12)

Ever since the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020, the region’s economies have been waging a war against the virus for control of their economies while saving lives.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict, if prolonged, could keep energy prices elevated and risks stoking inflation, dampening the prospects of economic recovery in the region. It could also exacerbate supply chain disruptions and raise global cost pressures, posing the risk of stagflation for major advanced economies. Policy surprises in these economies would have implications for interest rates, capital flows, and financial market volatility in the region.

The ASEAN+3 Regional Economic Outlook 2022 covers key macroeconomic developments in the ASEAN+3 region and assesses the risks to the outlook.

AGENDA FOR WEBINAR (APR 13)

The thematic study for AMRO’s ASEAN+3 Regional Economic Outlook (AREO) 2022 reflects on the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for the region’s growth strategy in the medium to long term.

Formulated against the backdrop of rapid technological advances and the sharp rise in regional income, the key elements of the growth strategy involve: moving up the technological value chain; developing services as a second driver of growth and employment; and leveraging digital technology to meet growing consumer demand in the region. Will COVID-19 upend this strategy?

The webinar “ASEAN+3 Growth Strategy in the Pandemic’s Wake” addresses the nature and extent of economic scarring caused by the COVID-19 crisis; the implications of the significant change in consumer behavior and business models for the region’s long-term growth strategy; and the opportunities, challenges, and policy priorities for the region as it embarks on its post-pandemic growth phase.
