AGENDA FOR PRESS CONFERENCE (MAR 31)

Struck by the COVID-19 pandemic and US-China trade and tech tension, the ASEAN+3 region is poised to recover this year, at the back of relatively effective containment measures, swift policy responses and the vaccine rollout. However, the path to recovery remains uncertain.

At this press launch of the AREO 2021, AMRO experts will discuss recent economic developments and the outlook for the ASEAN+3 region. What are the main headwinds to growth? What impact do the COVID-19 outbreak and the ongoing US-China trade and tech tension have on the region? What’s next on the economic agenda of policymakers? Tune in for more insights!

AGENDA FOR WEBINAR (APR 7)

The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified debate about the future reconfiguration of global value chains (GVCs) because of the massive disruptions to global supply chains and the accelerated adoption of digital technology in the conduct of trade and economic activity. In particular, the post-pandemic “new normal” points to a possible reset in global economic activity and trade patterns, further complicated by the risks of technology bifurcation, amid an increasingly protectionist environment.

This session discusses the implications of these complex issues for the ASEAN+3 region: How much will the organization of GVCs change? What will be the likely impact on current GVCs from greater prioritization on supply chain resilience rather than efficiency? What factors could lead to technology bifurcation, and how damaging would it be to the global economy? How should the region prepare itself for the challenges ahead?
